Tours · Vinh Long and Can Tho

Two homestays, 4 days, 3 nights

Four days with two host families on two rivers: one night on An Binh opposite Vinh Long, then two nights in a garden home in Phong Dien, with an afternoon among the Con Son households in between. Long enough to stop feeling like a visitor.

Who this trip is for

Travellers who want the homestay to be the trip rather than a night inside it. One night gives you an evening and a breakfast. Two nights in the same house give you a full day with nothing scheduled except the family's own work, which is when conversations go further than names and children's ages.

The pairing is deliberate. An Binh was among the Delta's first homestay islets, opposite a provincial town on the Co Chien River, with houses used to guests for decades. Phong Dien is orchard country south-west of Can Tho, on smaller waterways, where garden homes mix guest rooms with family farming. In between, the Con Son households show how a community can run tourism together as a cooperative. You will have opinions about all three by day four.

Day by day

Day 1

Ho Chi Minh City to An Binh

Van Thanh Mieu before the crossing

Pick-up at 07:00 and about two and a half to three hours to Vinh Long, 136 km down the expressway. Before crossing, a short stop at Van Thanh Mieu, the Confucian temple on the Long Ho river, built between 1864 and 1866 and quiet on most mornings. Then the ferry from the An Binh landing about 3 km from the centre.

Lunch, an afternoon in the garden and the canals, and dinner cooked with the family, as on our two-day An Binh trip. The evening is the first of three; nobody expects you to be good at it yet.

Day 2

An Binh to Con Son and Phong Dien

Breakfast with the family and an early paddle while the light is low. You cross back to Vinh Long mid-morning and drive to Can Tho, roughly 35–40 km further down the same corridor, about an hour.

After lunch, the boat from the Co Bac landing to Con Son: fish rafts, the jumping-fish pond and a folk-cake session with a household. At about 16:30 you cross back and drive to your Phong Dien garden homestay for the first of two nights.

Day 3

A full day in the garden

A day with no schedule but the family's

If you want it, a 05:30 boat to the small Phong Dien floating market, back for breakfast by 08:00. If not, sleep. The rest of the day follows the household: picking or pruning in the morning, cooking lunch together, a long rest in a hammock through the heat, a bicycle ride along the canal roads in the late afternoon.

In the evening you cook the main meal yourselves with the family's guidance. After rain, some hosts go out with a lamp to catch frogs along the ditches; it is a family habit, not a show, and you can join or not.

Day 4

Back to the city

A last breakfast and goodbyes. You drive back to Ho Chi Minh City, about three to three and a half hours, arriving early afternoon; or we drop you at Can Tho airport or a Can Tho hotel instead.

Host names

Where a homestay or garden is named on this site, the name comes from published press coverage or a dated travel guide listed under that section, with the date we read it. Naming a house does not mean it is the one on your trip. Your quote names the house we have checked for your dates, the room you will sleep in and the bathroom you will use.

Who this trip is NOT for

  • Anyone who knows one homestay night is enough; take the two-day An Binh trip instead
  • Travellers who need air conditioning every night in September or October without flexibility; rain and heat in a fan room for three nights is a real test
  • People who dislike unstructured time; day 3 is deliberately empty
  • Groups of more than eight, who would be split across neighbouring houses

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can we reverse the order?

Yes. Starting in Phong Dien and ending on An Binh works, and puts the longest drive on day 1. Some travellers prefer to end close to Vinh Long and its hotels.

What do we do if we are tired of homestays by night 3?

Tell your guide on day 2. We can move the last night to a hotel in Can Tho; the household is paid for what they prepared, and the difference is settled honestly on the final invoice.

Is three nights too much for children?

Usually the opposite: children settle into the routine of a household faster than adults. We prefer houses with other children for families.

Can we finish at Can Tho airport?

Yes. Can Tho airport listed only domestic routes when we checked in October 2026, so check your connection. We drop you there instead of driving back to Ho Chi Minh City.
