Ben Tre villages, coconut and nurseries

The villages of the former Ben Tre province, now part of Vinh Long: coconut lanes close to Ben Tre town, and the nursery and orchard communes of Cho Lach and Cai Mon on Minh islet. The closest homestay country to Ho Chi Minh City, and the quietest.

What these villages actually are

Two working landscapes a short drive apart. Near Ben Tre town, coconut runs through daily life: the palms along every canal, the husks drying in yards, family workshops boiling coconut milk, malt and sugar into the candy the area is known for. Further west, on Minh islet, the communes of Cho Lach grow seedlings, ornamental plants and fruit. The Cai Mon flower village alone covers about 40 hectares across Vinh Thanh, Long Thoi and Phu Son, and supplies more ornamental plants than anywhere in the Delta except Sa Dec.

In 2024 the then Cho Lach district launched the brand of a tourism culture village, planned since 2019, covering four hamlets in four communes, nearly 1,500 hectares in all, with paper flowers, ornamental apricot, chrysanthemum and seedlings as its crafts. It is a planning label more than a single attraction; what it means on the ground is that more households are opening gardens to visitors.

These are not river villages in the sense An Binh is. Boats matter less, roads more, and the work you share is in a nursery row or a candy kitchen rather than on the water. Many travellers find that a relief.

Host names

Where a homestay or garden is named on this site, the name comes from published press coverage or a dated travel guide listed under that section, with the date we read it. Naming a house does not mean it is the one on your trip. Your quote names the house we have checked for your dates, the room you will sleep in and the bathroom you will use.

How many nights

Two. The first in the coconut lanes near Ben Tre town, the second in a Cho Lach garden home. The drive between them is about an hour, which leaves most of each day for the households. One night here is possible but the short drive from the city makes it tempting to cram, and a homestay night squeezed between a long lunch and an early departure is the least useful kind.

Our Ben Tre villages, 3 days trip follows this plan.

When to go

JFMAMJJASONDComfortFruit

Fruit May to August; Cai Mon flowers in the weeks before Tet; salinity peaks March to April.

Fruit in the Cho Lach gardens is at its fullest from May to August, when rambutan, durian, longan and guava are harvested. The flower villages set buds after the 15th day of the 12th lunar month and are crowded with buyers in the run-up to Tet. The dry season is the most comfortable for sleeping, with one caveat below.

Salt water in the dry season

The former Ben Tre province is on the national forecasting centre's list of areas exposed to saltwater intrusion. In the 2025–26 dry season the national forecasting centre expected the peak in March and April 2026, with salinity of four parts per thousand reaching 30–35 km up the Ham Luong and 35–40 km up the Co Chien, below the 2012–2024 average. In a bad year households near the estuaries ration fresh water and some gardens suffer. If your dates fall in a bad week we tell you, and choose a house further upstream.

Getting there

Ben Tre town is about 85 km from central Ho Chi Minh City; allow one and three-quarter to two and a quarter hours. The second Rach Mieu bridge opened to traffic on 19 August 2025, and the temporary Rach Mieu ferry stopped the next day, so the crossing from the My Tho side is now entirely by bridge. Cho Lach is more than 40 km beyond Ben Tre town. From Cho Lach, the Dinh Khao ferry is the short way across to Vinh Long and An Binh.

When to skip it

  • You want boats, river traffic and the feel of an islet in a big river; choose An Binh
  • The final two weeks before Tet, if you want quiet; Cai Mon is full of traders and buyers
  • A severe salinity year in March or April, if the households you would stay with are short of fresh water
  • You want a single long homestay with one family; the area works better as two short ones

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is Ben Tre still a province?

No. Since 1 July 2025 it is part of Vinh Long province. The town and the name remain in everyday use.

Is coconut candy a tourist product?

It is sold to tourists, but it has long been made and eaten locally. The family workshops are real workplaces; you will see the whole process if you arrive while they are cooking.

Can we take plants home?

Within Vietnam, yes. Taking plants or seeds abroad usually breaks import rules at home; check before you buy.

Are there mosquitoes?

Yes, especially at dusk by the canals and from June to October, the dengue season. Use repellent and sleep under the net or in a screened room.
