Mekong Spirit

Do the homestays have private bathrooms?

Some do, some do not. Many Delta homestays have a bathroom shared between guest rooms, often a short walk across the yard. Your quote says which one you get. If you need a private bathroom, put it in the form and we only propose houses that have one.

Is it safe to drink the water?

Drink bottled or boiled water; we ask every house to have it ready for guests. Brush your teeth with bottled water if you have a sensitive stomach.

Can children come?

Yes. Children usually take to the fishing and the boats faster than adults do. Tell us their ages; for small children we prefer houses where the guest rooms are away from the riverbank steps.

Do the families speak English?

A few words at most in most houses. Your guide translates, and much of the evening works without translation once the cooking starts.

Tours

Can we join a group departure?

No. Every trip is private, for your party only. Homestays work better that way: the family cooks for you, not for a coach.

Can we start from Can Tho instead of Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes. Starting in Can Tho shortens the Con Son and two-homestay trips by most of a morning. Tell us where you will be the night before.

Can we add a hotel night in between?

Yes. A hotel night in Can Tho or Vinh Long between two homestays is a common request, especially in the hot months. It changes the price and we show both versions.

How far ahead should we book?

Four weeks is comfortable outside the Lunar New Year period. The weeks around Tet fill early and some families close to guests over the holiday itself.

An Binh, 2 days

Can we choose the homestay?

You can ask for one by name. We check whether it has the room you need on your dates and tell you honestly if we would choose another house, and why.

What happens if it rains all afternoon?

The cooking moves earlier and the boat trip shorter. Rain in the Delta usually comes in heavy bursts rather than all day, especially from May to November.

Is the ferry safe?

It is a short, busy crossing used by local traffic all day. Life jackets are required on cross-river passenger boats; on the smaller canal boats your guide makes sure everyone wears one.

Can we stay a second night?

Yes. A second night on An Binh adds a full day in the garden and a dawn on the river. We price it as a three-day version on the same quote.

Con Son & Phong Dien, 2 days

Why not sleep on Con Son?

Because we have not been able to check overnight rooms there against an independent source. Con Son is organised for day visits; Phong Dien gardens have hosted overnight guests for many years.

Is the canal draining unpleasant?

It is muddy, warm and noisy, and children love it. Wear clothes you can rinse and leave at the house. You can also watch from the bank.

Can we do the Cai Rang market instead of Phong Dien?

Yes, with a longer boat ride. Cai Rang is larger but increasingly touristic; Phong Dien is smaller and closer to the homestay. We describe both honestly before you choose.

Can we start in Can Tho?

Yes, and it saves most of the morning drive. We collect you from your Can Tho hotel at about 08:30 and the rest of the trip runs the same way.

Ben Tre villages, 3 days

Why two different houses?

Because the two parts of Ben Tre live differently: coconut work near the town, nurseries and fruit in Cho Lach. Two nights in one house is also possible if you prefer fewer changes.

How simple is the simple night?

A clean room in the family house with a bed or a raised wooden platform, a mosquito net and a fan, and a bathroom shared with the family or other guests. We send photos of the actual room before you pay.

Can we cycle between the two houses?

Not the whole way: it is around an hour by car and the main road is busy. We can drop you for the last few kilometres through the lanes.

Is the coconut-candy workshop a shopping stop?

It is a working family business and they sell what they make. You are welcome to buy and under no obligation to, and the visit is about the work, not the counter.

Two homestays, 4 days

Can we reverse the order?

Yes. Starting in Phong Dien and ending on An Binh works, and puts the longest drive on day 1. Some travellers prefer to end close to Vinh Long and its hotels.

What do we do if we are tired of homestays by night 3?

Tell your guide on day 2. We can move the last night to a hotel in Can Tho; the household is paid for what they prepared, and the difference is settled honestly on the final invoice.

Is three nights too much for children?

Usually the opposite: children settle into the routine of a household faster than adults. We prefer houses with other children for families.

Can we finish at Can Tho airport?

Yes. Can Tho airport listed only domestic routes when we checked in October 2026, so check your connection. We drop you there instead of driving back to Ho Chi Minh City.

Pricing

Why is your quote higher than others for the same islet?

Usually because of the guide staying overnight, the private car, and the room. A quote that leaves out the evening guide or puts you in a group house can be much cheaper. Ask any operator what room you get and whether the guide stays; then compare.

Can we pay the family directly?

For drinks, things you buy and tips, yes. The room and meals are arranged in advance and paid by us to the household so the family is not left negotiating with guests.

Is a single traveller charged more?

Yes, per person, because the car and guide are not shared. A solo traveller is very welcome; the evenings are often better for it.

Do prices include the floating market?

Where the itinerary lists it, the boat is included. Food you buy from the market boats is not.

Read in full: Pricing.

How to book

How far ahead should we book?

Four weeks is comfortable; two is often possible. Around Lunar New Year, book two months ahead.

Can we book only the homestay, without a guide?

Not through us. The guide is what makes the evening work in a house where nobody speaks your language, and it is how we keep an eye on the room and the boats.

What if the household cancels?

It is rare but happens, usually for a family event. We offer a comparable house nearby and show you its room before you accept, or refund that part of the trip.

Do you need our passport details?

Yes, a copy before travel, so the household has your details for the night, as a hotel would.

Destinations

Which islet is quietest at night?

Phong Dien gardens and the Cho Lach villages are usually quieter than An Binh, which faces busy river channels. None is silent: roosters and frogs are everywhere.

Which is easiest to reach?

The Ben Tre villages, at about 85 km from central Ho Chi Minh City. An Binh adds a short ferry from Vinh Long; Con Son a short boat from Can Tho.

Is Cai Be or My Tho a homestay place?

Both have garden visits and a few rooms, but they are mostly day-trip territory from the city. We base our homestay nights further in, where evenings are quieter.

Can we combine the Ben Tre villages and An Binh?

Yes. A route from Cho Lach via the Dinh Khao ferry reaches An Binh; we can build it as a four-day trip.

An Binh islet

Are the award-winning homestays better?

They met a published standard at the time of the award, which is a good sign for hygiene and organisation. They are also some of the busiest. Whether one suits you depends on the room and the night's bookings.

Can we cycle round the islet?

Yes, on narrow concrete lanes shared with motorbikes. Many houses lend bicycles. Keep to the lanes the host suggests; some end at a ditch.

Is the river water used for washing?

Ask your host what feeds the bathroom; for drinking and brushing teeth use bottled water. Do not swim in the river: it is busy with boats and the current is strong.

Is An Binh worth a day visit without staying?

It can be, but the gardens alone are much like gardens elsewhere. What An Binh does differently is the evening with a family, which a day visit misses.

Read in full: An Binh islet.

Con Son & Phong Dien

Can we visit Con Son without a tour?

Yes. Boats cross from the Co Bac landing and the households take independent visitors. Booking meals in advance is advised because daily numbers are limited.

Are the jumping fish a circus act?

It is a feeding routine at one garden house that visitors have known for close to ten years: the snakehead leap for food. Some visitors find it charming, some odd. It lasts minutes.

Is Phong Dien far from Can Tho city?

About 17–20 km, so a hotel night in Can Tho is easy to add before or after.

Is the canal draining worth the money?

For a family or a group, usually yes, because it is priced per canal. For a couple it is expensive for an hour of mud, and watching from the bank is free.

Ben Tre villages

Is Ben Tre still a province?

No. Since 1 July 2025 it is part of Vinh Long province. The town and the name remain in everyday use.

Is coconut candy a tourist product?

It is sold to tourists, but it has long been made and eaten locally. The family workshops are real workplaces; you will see the whole process if you arrive while they are cooking.

Can we take plants home?

Within Vietnam, yes. Taking plants or seeds abroad usually breaks import rules at home; check before you buy.

Are there mosquitoes?

Yes, especially at dusk by the canals and from June to October, the dengue season. Use repellent and sleep under the net or in a screened room.

Read in full: Ben Tre villages.

Vinh Long

Is there anything to do in Vinh Long town?

A riverfront walk, the market and Van Thanh Mieu. Enough for a few hours, not a day.

Can half our group stay in town and half on the islet?

Yes. Everyone eats dinner with the family; those in town take the ferry back with the guide or a driver.

Is Vinh Long the same as Vinh Long province?

The town is now Long Chau ward, the administrative centre. The province, since 2025, also includes the former Ben Tre and Tra Vinh.

Should we sleep in Vinh Long before an An Binh trip?

Only if you are arriving from somewhere other than Ho Chi Minh City. From the city, the morning drive gets you to the islet in time for lunch.

A homestay night

Is it clean?

The houses we propose are clean by any reasonable standard, simply furnished, and swept daily. Insects are part of the countryside; geckos on the wall eat mosquitoes and are welcome.

Is there Wi-Fi?

Often, and mobile data generally works. Signal can drop in the far corners of a garden; treat a night offline as part of the trip.

Can we lock our room?

Most guest rooms lock, and a lock on the bathroom door is a basic standard. Keep passports and cash with you or with your guide, as you would anywhere.

What if we cannot sleep?

Tell your guide. The next night can be moved to a garden room or a hotel nearby, and the change is settled honestly on the final invoice.

Homestay etiquette

Should we bring a gift?

It is welcome, not expected. Something small and from your country is better than something expensive.

Is it rude to refuse food?

Not if done kindly. Leave a little in your bowl and say you are full. Hosts will offer again; a smile and a hand on your stomach ends it.

Can we go to bed early?

Yes. Families go to bed early themselves. Say good night to the oldest person present.

Can we bring our own food or drinks?

Snacks are fine. A meal of your own at a homestay where dinner is cooked for you would be odd; buying drinks from the household is better than bringing your own.

Community tourism

Are the award-winning homestays the responsible ones?

An award means a house met a published standard when assessed. It is a good sign. It does not tell you how many other guests share the house on your night; ask.

Is a big homestay bad?

No. A big house can be well run and employ neighbours. It is a different experience from a family house with two guest rooms, and you should know which one you are booking.

Should we tip the family?

It is welcome, not expected. An envelope given to the oldest person present, or through the guide, is the usual way.

Can we visit without an operator?

Yes. Many households take independent guests. You will need some Vietnamese or a translation app, and you should book meals ahead where daily numbers are limited.

Who will our guide be?

Send the form with your questions. We reply by email to the address you give, and can go back and forth as often as you need.

Do you work in languages other than English?

The site and our replies are in English. Ask in the form if you need another language for the guide; we tell you honestly whether we can.
