Ben Tre villages, 3 days, 2 nights

Two nights in two different family homes in the former Ben Tre province, now part of Vinh Long: the first near the coconut lanes outside Ben Tre town, the second among the nurseries and orchards of Cho Lach and Cai Mon. Short drives, long afternoons, and two households to compare.

Who this trip is for

Travellers who want time more than activity. Ben Tre town is about 85 km from central Ho Chi Minh City, and since the second Rach Mieu bridge opened in August 2025 the river crossing no longer depends on the old ferry. The drive is the shortest of any trip on this site, so the first afternoon is long and the last morning unhurried.

The two nights are deliberately different. The first house sits in the lanes near Ben Tre town, where coconut is still the backbone of village work and family workshops turn it into candy. The second is in Cho Lach, on Minh islet more than 40 km further on, where households grow seedlings, ornamental plants and fruit. Seeing two families in two economies, a day apart, is the point of the trip.

A note on names: Ben Tre is no longer a province. Since July 2025 it has been part of Vinh Long province. Everyone still says Ben Tre, and so do we, but tickets and official maps may not.

Day by day

Day 1

Ho Chi Minh City to the coconut lanes

A family coconut-candy workshop, start to finish

Pick-up at 08:00. About 85 km and one and three-quarter to two and a quarter hours bring you across the Tien River on the Rach Mieu bridges to the villages just outside Ben Tre town. Lunch is with your first host family.

In the afternoon the household takes you round the work that coconut makes: a family candy workshop where coconut milk, malt and sugar are cooked down and cut, the husks and shells drying in the yard, the lanes where every second house has a stack of fronds. You cycle the flat lanes with the guide and paddle a canal at the end of the day. Dinner is cooked with the family.

Day 2

To Cho Lach and the Cai Mon nurseries

After breakfast you drive about an hour to Cho Lach on Minh islet. The Cai Mon flower village covers about 40 hectares across the communes of Vinh Thanh, Long Thoi and Phu Son, and the wider Cho Lach tourism culture village, planned since 2019, spreads over nearly 1,500 hectares of nurseries, orchards and lanes. Your second host family is one of these households.

You spend the day with them: potting, watering and moving seedlings in the nursery rows, and, from May to August, picking rambutan, longan or guava in the orchard. In one rambutan garden near Con Phu Da visitors dig for rice snails in the mud, and you can join them. Evening is quiet: dinner, a walk along the canal, fireflies on some nights.

Day 3

A morning in the garden, back to the city

Early hours are the working hours here, before the heat. You help with whatever the household is doing, then walk to the old K26 brick kiln in Phu Son beside the Ham Luong River. After an early lunch you drive back to Ho Chi Minh City, arriving mid to late afternoon.

The Ben Tre villages profile

Room typesFrom simple wooden rooms in the family house to garden rooms with their own bathroom. Published 2024 prices for Ben Tre homestays ranged from about 188,000 to 1,750,000 VND a night, which gives an idea of the spread
BathroomShared in the simpler village houses, private in garden rooms; your quote says which
Mosquito netUsual in fan rooms; essential near the canals at dusk
AccessAll by road over the Rach Mieu bridges; short walks or bicycles in the villages
Real activitiesCoconut workshops, cycling, paddling, nursery work, fruit picking in season, rice-snail digging
SeasonFruit May to August; Cai Mon flowers set buds after the 15th day of the 12th lunar month, so the weeks before Tet are full of colour and full of traders
When not to choose itMarch and April if fresh-water shortage worries you; Tet week; if you want river traffic and boats rather than gardens

The dry season brings salt water up the estuaries. In March 2026 the national forecasting centre reported salinity of four parts per thousand reaching 30–35 km up the Ham Luong and 35–40 km up the Co Chien. The Cho Lach gardens lie further inland than most of that, but households watch it closely and some ration fresh water in a bad year. If that happens on your dates, we tell you and offer another house.

Host names

Where a homestay or garden is named on this site, the name comes from published press coverage or a dated travel guide listed under that section, with the date we read it. Naming a house does not mean it is the one on your trip. Your quote names the house we have checked for your dates, the room you will sleep in and the bathroom you will use.

Who this trip is NOT for

  • Travellers who want boats and river life at the centre; this trip is about gardens and lanes
  • Anyone who finds a second, simpler night a step too far; we can make both nights private-bathroom rooms, which narrows the choice of houses
  • Visitors in the last two weeks before Tet who want quiet; Cai Mon is at its busiest then
  • People hoping for durian picked from the tree; in the gardens that grow it the fruit falls when ripe

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Why two different houses?

Because the two parts of Ben Tre live differently: coconut work near the town, nurseries and fruit in Cho Lach. Two nights in one house is also possible if you prefer fewer changes.

How simple is the simple night?

A clean room in the family house with a bed or a raised wooden platform, a mosquito net and a fan, and a bathroom shared with the family or other guests. We send photos of the actual room before you pay.

Can we cycle between the two houses?

Not the whole way: it is around an hour by car and the main road is busy. We can drop you for the last few kilometres through the lanes.

Is the coconut-candy workshop a shopping stop?

It is a working family business and they sell what they make. You are welcome to buy and under no obligation to, and the visit is about the work, not the counter.
