What Con Son actually is

Con Son is a small islet that was, until recently, poor and cut off. A 2019 article recalls that residents nicknamed it the islet of 'six withouts', among them no electricity, roads, school, clinic or clean water. Power and running water arrived in 2014; community tourism began in 2015. By 2019 more than thirty households each offered a dish or an activity. By late 2025 the islet counted more than seventy households and nearly three hundred people, and in early 2022 a cooperative with twenty official members was formed out of an intergenerational self-help club to coordinate visits.

The result is genuinely community-run, and it is set up for day visitors. Each garden house has a role: one family raises fish on rafts and has turned nearly a hectare of them into a small fish museum; another keeps the pond where snakehead leap for food; others make folk cakes or cook the shared lunch, which is carried between houses. More than sixty travel companies send guests. Weekends can be busy.

Two honest caveats. First, overnight stays on Con Son are not something we have been able to verify independently: a 2019 article recommended developing homestays there, and guides published in 2024 and 2025 describe day visits. Second, in 2019 the city approved the investment policy for a large resort on the islet; we have not seen it built. We will update this page when either changes.

What Phong Dien is

Phong Dien is the orchard belt along the smaller waterways south-west of Can Tho, around the point where the Can Tho River branches from the Hau. Garden homes here have hosted overnight guests for years. A 2012 report described guests at one family harvesting and roasting cacao, gathering vegetables and cooking on a wood stove, and at another going out after rain to catch frogs with a lamp. The same report listed a room for two with dinner and breakfast at 400,000 VND with a fan or 600,000 VND with air conditioning; those prices are long out of date, but the fan-or-air-con choice is still how rooms are offered.

Phong Dien also has resort-style garden lodges that call themselves homestays. They are comfortable and some are well run; they are not what we mean by a night with a family, and we say which is which on your quote. The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism lists one Can Tho homestay, Mekong Rustic, as a sustainable option.

Host names

Where a homestay or garden is named on this site, the name comes from published press coverage or a dated travel guide listed under that section, with the date we read it. Naming a house does not mean it is the one on your trip. Your quote names the house we have checked for your dates, the room you will sleep in and the bathroom you will use.

The Phong Dien floating market

At the fork of the Can Tho River, a small market gathers from about 05:30 and is busiest until about 07:30. A 2024 guide mentions dozens of boats waiting to take visitors; one 2026 commercial guide estimates fifteen to thirty trading boats, many rowed, a figure we could not confirm. It is a local market more than a sight. Noodle soup from a boat started at about 20,000 VND in a 2024 guide, and the advice to agree any boat fare before boarding still stands.

The larger Cai Rang market, recognised as national intangible heritage in 2016, has shrunk as trucks replaced boats; road building and embankments have taken its space and a growing share of the boats now carry tourists. Neither market is the reason to come here. Both are a good reason to be up early on a homestay morning.

When to go

JFMAMJJASONDComfortCon Son fruit

Con Son guides give April to July for fruit. September is the wettest month in Can Tho; April the hottest.

Can Tho's rain falls mostly from May to November, peaking in September at around 450 mm. April is the hottest month, with mean daily highs near 34 °C, which makes a fan room hard work. December to February is the most comfortable time to sleep in a garden home.

Getting there

Can Tho is about 171 km from central Ho Chi Minh City; allow three to three and a half hours by car via the expressways and the My Thuan bridges. Buses run around the clock, take about four hours and cost roughly 170,000–260,000 VND. Can Tho airport is about 9 km from the centre and listed only domestic routes when we checked in October 2026. For Con Son, drive or take a taxi to the Co Bac landing, on a side lane off Dang Van Day road in Binh Thuy and cross by boat in ten to fifteen minutes. Phong Dien is by road from the city, about 17–20 km.

When to skip it

  • You want to spend the night on the islet you visit during the day
  • You are visiting Con Son on a weekend or public holiday and dislike crowds of day visitors
  • You expect a large floating market; both Can Tho markets are smaller than their reputation
  • April, if a fan room in 34 °C heat would spoil the trip and an air-conditioned room is not available

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can we visit Con Son without a tour?

Yes. Boats cross from the Co Bac landing and the households take independent visitors. Booking meals in advance is advised because daily numbers are limited.

Are the jumping fish a circus act?

It is a feeding routine at one garden house that visitors have known for close to ten years: the snakehead leap for food. Some visitors find it charming, some odd. It lasts minutes.

Is Phong Dien far from Can Tho city?

About 17–20 km, so a hotel night in Can Tho is easy to add before or after.

Is the canal draining worth the money?

For a family or a group, usually yes, because it is priced per canal. For a couple it is expensive for an hour of mud, and watching from the bank is free.
